Halloween Costume Recap 2007 - 2014

A brief history of my Halloween costumes from the last few years
November 2nd, 2014Ā  by Blaine Garrett

Halloween this year was pretty low key. We had a small costume party at my place where the laziest costume "won". That said, I've definitely put some effort into some costumes over the years. Here is a rundown of the last few years.

2014 - A Halloween Mask

I have to credit this costume to my dad. My folks have a garage sale every year and a lot of it is basically junk. Old pairs of pants for 25 cents, broken tools from the 80s, mismatched socks, etc. At one such sale when I was a kid, my dad took an old jock strap from my older brothers and stapled it to a board and wrote "Ray Nitschke's Jock - $1000". It got lots of laughs. With a similar sense of humor, he took this beat up old soup pot and, with a sharpie, drew a jack-o-lantern face and wrote "Halloween Mask" . A few years back, I snagged it for sentimental value and its been in my garage for a while. For our aforementioned lazy Halloween party, it seemed appropriate to don.

2013 - A Moon Rock

Another sort of last minute costume. Katie went as Sally Ride, and last minute I decided to go as a moon rock. It is a bunch of expanding spray foam with a paper bag as a base. We ended up just going to Tracys Saloon for dinner and drinks and met up with some friends.

2012 - Lobo from DC comics

This year I put a wee bit more effort into my costume and went as Lobo from DC comics. We ended up at Jobot's "Spacement" party and hit up Stanley's in NE first. The picture below is with "French Kiss". Not pictured, my sweet 90s style shin gard boots and a bunch of chains.

2011 - Julian from Trailer Park Boys

This was the first year Katie and I celebrated Halloween together. She went as Sarah from Trailer Park Boys and I went as Julian. We went to a house party with some of her old classmates. No one really understood who we were.

2010 - Blacklight Skeleton

For Halloween 2010, the Dim Crew was live painting at 1st Ave's Record Room for the Hellraiser DJ series some friends put on. I spackled on some blue acrylic fluorescent paint and donned my ancient Misfits shirt. It was a pretty fun night.

2009 - Sabretooth

My friend Karen had a Halloween party at her place in St. Paul. Continuing with the X-Men theme from the previous year, I went as Sabretooth from the Wolverine Origins movie. Arika did my nails, which ended up being really sharp and made it dangerous to use the bathroom. ā€‹See more pics.

2008 - Wolverine from the X - Men

This might be the most effort I have put into a costume. I tried really hard to make the claws somewhat retractable. In the 11th hour, I just duct tape the original design to some gloves and called it a day. Dim crew painted at the Loft above Barfly for the Shelter DJ set. It was a good ol time. However, drunken Wolverine tends to want to spar with other Marvel characters and I may have cut Captain America's cardboard shield in half. More Pics

2007 - Skullface Cowboy thing

Quicky simple costume for a party. This was the first year since I was a kid that I bothered much with a Halloween costume.  I can't remember exactly what we did that year, but I think we ended up at 1st Ave for the costume contest. I drank a lot of beers with makeup on the lip.
